PLoT is a university-affiliated theatre company operating in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. They perform three full-length plays each year along with a season of one act plays. They hold the status as being UTAS's only entirely student-run drama society.
Produce Lots of Theatre, as the name implies, have a very busy production schedule each year. A typical PLoT calendar might look like this:
mid-Feb - Free Entry Event
PLoT participates in TUU's O-Week.
late-Mar/early-Apr - Shakespeare Production
This is in-conjunction with the UTAS School of English, and can be a reading or a full show, previous examples include Much Ado About Nothing, The Merchant of Venice and The Tempest.
early-May - First Major Production
During this time of the year we have the opportunity to do larger-scale productions such as Wolf Lullaby, The Misanthrope and The Jungle Book.
Jul/Aug/Sep - Second Major Production
This production is generally even larger than the first considering the extended rehearsal period. In the past we've put on Alice in Wonderland, The Caucasian Chalk Circle and Butterflies are Free.
late-Sep/early-Oct - One Act Plays
At this time PLoT holds a scriptwriting competition and the 3-5 winning scripts are chosen to be performed on stage in a Hobart theatre then taken to Deloraine for their annual One Act Play Festival.
late-Oct - Annual General Meeting
Not just a meeting, but our end-of-year party, the AGM is a celebration of the theatrical year. On the Night-of-Nights we also hold elections for the new PLoT exec.
PLoT, like most university societies, is run by an executive of 10 people elected by the general membership each year at its Annual General Meeting. Positions on the exec include President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Societies' Council Rep and five General Reps.
PLoT is made possible by assistance granted by the Tasmania University Union and facilities provided by the University of Tasmania. We also get by on the generousity of our sponsors, ticket sales and membership fees.
PLoT membership is open to anyone, and the benefits are numerous. Although PLoT shows are predominately run by uni students, non-students are more than welcome to join in the fun. If you would like more information, please contact us.
We're glad you asked! PLoT requires the skills, expertise and enthusiasm of a whole variety of roles.
Directors
All PLoT shows are directed by university students just like you. We call for directors three times a year; for our First Major production, our Second Major production and our annual One Act Play Season. If you have a great idea for a play and would like to direct with us please contact PLoT.
Writers
If you are a writer, PLoT gives you a real chance to see your work on stage. We are eager to foster the creative talent of our student body, and we actively encourage aspiring playwrights to submit their plays to our First and Second Major production calls, and also to our One Act Play Season.
Actors
Obviously, a theatre company wouldn't be much fun without its actors. Look out for audition posters around campus, or subscribe to our mailing list to receive information about upcoming auditions.
Crew Members
PLoT is always on the lookout for enthusiastic people to help out with a whole number of things - everything from stage lighting to music, to art design, to publicity and backstage crew. Every production is different, and we encourage you to contact the director of the production if you would like to get involved.
Audience Members
PLoT is run completely on the hard-work and enthusiasm of our volunteers. We work really hard each year to put on a whole variety of events and productions, not just for the university community, but for the community at large. PLoT shows are known for their sense of fun and enjoyment, and unlike many other theatre shows, tickets to PLoT shows are always set at very low prices. (At one point - the Merchant of Venice - we were charging $3 a ticket!) That is why we encourage university students to take a break from study every now and then and catch up with one of our latest productions - we promise you you won't regret it!
Sponsors
Because PLoT is an entertainment-based society, we have access to a whole range of publicity avenues. As a result, we reach out to the general community each year to find sponsors who match our interests so that we might collaborate with them in publicising our shows.
